Top 5 Winter Getaways

Don’t be put off by the cold weather – winter is actually one of the best seasons for a caravanning holiday in your Winjana RV 5th wheeler. Travelling to the Australian outback is perfect around this time of year, to escape the winter chill. Here are our top 5 caravanning destinations for the winter season, along with tips to ensure you have a stress-free and enjoyable holiday:

 1. Cooktown, QLD

Cooktown, located on the Cape York Peninsula, is an ideal caravanning destination during the winter months with warm and sunny weather. The town has incredible mountain views, waterfalls, rivers and beaches offering excellent fishing spots. While you are there, you must go on the Guurrbi Tour which is widely considered one of the best Aboriginal experiences in the country. James Cook Museum is well-worth a visit to learn about the history and culture of the town. To experience 360-degree views of the town, drive up or walk to Grassy Hill – walkers should allow for a 20-minute ascend along the trail via Cherry Tree Bay.

During winter, the town hosts some great events, so pop into the local Visitor Information Centre to find out about all the local events and attractions.

 2. Longreach, QLD

Longreach in Western Queensland is another perfect holiday location to escape the winter chill during the day. Take the Outback Aussie Tours sunset cruise along the Thompson River, followed by dinner and campfire entertainment on the banks. Jump on a Cobb & Co Coach ride with Outback Pioneers. Visit the Qantas Founders Outback Museum for a collection of aircraft and memorabilia including a 747 jet tour or pay tribute to the early stockmen at the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame.

 3. Alice Springs, NT

May to September is the best time to visit the Northern Territory in your Winjana RV 5th wheeler. Alice Springs is of course a must-visit to see the iconic Uluru and Kata Tjuta National Parks. You can see the magnificent outback on a bike ride or walking trail, or from the sky in a hot air balloon or plane flying over the MacDonnell Ranges. Visitors to Alice Spring highly recommend the Kangaroo Sanctuary, Alice Springs Desert Park, and tour with Brolga (known as the Kangaroo Dundee).

 4. Broome, WA

Located north of Perth is the town of Broome which is an ideal outback escape with a rugged, vibrant landscape. Here you can ride a camel into the sunset along the sands of Cable Beach or discover dinosaur prints at Gantheaume Point or wander through China town. Two of Australia’s most famous 4WD adventures are located here – The Savannah Way between Broome and Darwin via Kununurra, and the Gibb River Road. The Winjana RV Ormiston 630 would be perfect for these roads across the vast Australian outback.

  5. Carnarvon Gorge, QLD

Carnarvon National Park showcases Australia’s natural beauty with lush rainforest, exotic wildlife and tranquil creeks. It is one of Queensland’s most popular National Parks, also home to stunning Aboriginal rock and cave artworks. You can visit the national park from Roma via Injune, take care, the last 30km of road is unsealed and fairly rough. Petrol is not available anywhere in the park so you will have to make sure to fill up at Rolleston or Injune.

During the night, these areas can get quite cold with the possibility of rain so make sure you pack suitable clothing. Days are also shorter so make sure you arrive to your camp site earlier than normal to have time to set-up before dark. And as with all driving in the Outback, make sure you have extra petrol and water with you for emergencies.
